Kaloko in Kona; Starting out on the Queen K up Hina Lani this is 4800 feet of climbing in about 12 miles, brutal with zero breaks. Do this on a standard and get a taste of a Alpine climb.
Trust me here, carry up a jacket as its crazy cold up top.

South Wales: RISCA/CWMCARN: We have 6 hills i know of that are over 25%, 2 over 30%. The problem being theyre quite short 3-10mins work.

Wattsville is 1600m long at an average of 24%, that is extremely tough. Your forarms hurt from holding on so tight, lower back is dying. 1 leaf, 1 wet patch 1 slip ur off and ur not getting back on again.

We also have 2 in Cwmbran that are 20% plus for 1km.

Ive done the bwlch and llangynidr (and the tumble 12 times in a day, the tumble (llanfoist, blaenavon) is harder than both easily). All of these climbs can be done fairly easily if you go slow.

Our rule for if a hill is steep is how hard is it going as slow as you can. at 25%+ u cant really go fast or slow, its just trying not to stop.

Colle Fauniera - I was lucky enough to cross this narrow road when it was still closed
Tunnel et Col du Parpaillon - unpaved, old military road, connecting two of the deepest valleys in the French Alps
Col du Tende - the switchbacks are as regular as steps on a staircase; old military forts wait on top
Klammjoch -remote, unpaved road between Austria and Italy
Wuerzjoch -especially the narrow approach on the south side makes this interesting
Col de Solude - a shelf road with steep drop offs and several dark tunnels
Cormet d'Areches -an unpaved alternative to nearby Cormet de Roselend
Col de la Cayolle -highest point on a three pass dayloop
D32 Utelle s(u) -the highest point is a medieval hilltown with great views
Col de la Croix de Fere -a popular Tour de France pass
Col d'Illoire s(u) -highest point on south side of Canyon du Verdun; more descriptions at cyclepass.com.

. funchal to pico arrerio; try this one.super hard up all the way.cycling in madeira is seriously difficult no flat roads just hills and more hills.
funchal to the highest point is 1800mtr takes 2 hrs.av gradient 9.3percent. not for the faint hearted.

Mt. Baldy - Southern California; Because it is in my backyard I enjoy the climb on Mt. Baldy Road to the Mt. Baldy Ski Area.; From what i have read the length at 8.8 miles and average grade of 7.6% with sections of 15% and even steeper switchbacks compare to Alpe d'huez at 8.8 miles with a 7.9% average.; Usually can't beat that as a nice leg burning wake up call in the morning!

Mt. Evans; Beauty beyond belief up to 14,130'. From Idaho Springs to Mt. Evans summit you have the first 7 miles of gradual climbing and then for the next 20 miles it is up from there. Net vertical gain is 6575'.

Gap of Mamore, Donegal, Ireland; Must be the steepest climb in Ireland. Only 2km in length but average gradient is almost 20%. At times it reaches 30%. I've done the Tourmalet, Ventoux et al but was never as shattered as after Mamore. A must for all hill conquerors

The Grand Mesa............; The climing starts right out the gate from Hotchkiss Colorado. Its 42 miles of climing the worst of It Is about 24 miles long none stop. At the top you are around 10,980ft. Its a fun ride down hill; If you have a head wind Its a good thing.....If not you can reach speeds of 55+... I hit 47 In a head wind...
The tamdum that went past me at the time hit 60+ I asked the rider's At the bottom about that... Thats a big wow.......Try the Grand Mesa Its a good one..

GRADE: The road climbed to Fall River Pass on steep grades sometimes reaching 16%. Some early automobiles had to climb in reverse due to their weak engines and gravity-fed fuel system. Surface materials washed off quickly.; I would have to say magnolia road out of boulder. short but sweet. also fall river road The Fall River Road was the first road to cross the Rocky Mountains in northern Colorado.; Starting by Larimer and Grant counties in 1913 before the establishment of Rocky Mountain National Park, the early construction was carried out by state prison inmates.; The convicts made little progress and contractors completed the road in 1920. The unpaved mountain road climbed from Horseshoe Park up the steep Fall River Valley over a series of tight switchbacks to reach Fall River Pass at 11,796';; from there, the road continued down the west side of the mountains to Grand Lake. Despite the popularity of the route, the road proved difficult to traverse and maintain.; Automobiles had trouble mastering the steep grade and tight curves and avalanches often buried the road forty feet deep.; Following the completion of Trail Ridge Road in 1932 the eastern Half of Fall River Road became a one-way scenic drive from Endovalley up to Fall River Pass; the western half was abandoned or overbuilt by the Trail Ridge Road

Try this in Malaysia. In 2007, it was ranked 4th toughest mountain to climb. I climbed the mountain twice and will be doing it again next month.

Britain is not known for long climbs...but it is known for its totally brutal short ones.
Hardknott(from Eskdale) or Wrynose (from Langdale) are 2 of the toughest climbs ive ever done...only 300M ascent...but these climbs see more people walking than your big continental climbs..

you are really tested mentally and physically to the full on these brutes....Rosedale Chimney is also a disgraceful climb...steeper than anything else but thankfully not as long..
Of the Continental climbs ive done I found the Tourmalet the hardest...The Cirque de Litor between the Soulor and the Aubisque was mesmerising aswell.

The Croix De Fer was outstanding aswell....other beautiful climbs...La Berarde...Aspin...
Most difficult Ski Station ive did is Pla D'Adet....much harder than Alpe De Huez/Luz Ardiden etc....

I have been in the quest for the toughest climbs in the world for 30 years. Austri is the place for tough climbs.

Apart from the really hard climbs (see above), never underestimate the "giant" passes which may not be so steep, but get you exhausted at the end, because of length and altitude.

My favorite ones are : Pico Veletta (Spain) Mount Evans (USA)and Trail Ridge road (USA) Bernina Pass (from Tirano, Italy)

Stelvio for its incredible number of hairpins, Agnel (from guillestre) for its view over Italian alps, Izouard for its variation during the climb and moon landscape near the top, croix de fer because there is really an iron cross on top,

Bonette because it's the highest in altitude that I climbed thus far.

1.Bielsa tunnel; I cycled through the Bielsa tunnel in 2002. Lighting was not a problem - I managed with ordinary (cheap)bike lights and the great thing is,; if you go from France to Spain, the very peak of your climb (huge challenge with full panniers/bike weighing 80 pounds) is at the lip of the entrance to the tunnel.; So, you zoom through it at about 80 miles an hour and it only takes a few moments. Would be very noisy and off putting cycling the other way and coping with the traffic.; Yes. Ride down to Ainsa is amazing - 25 mile descent?? Well, felt like it anyway.

Timmelsjoch for the beauty of the Passeier valley. Col de la Core for the serenity. Col du Parpaillon because it is maybe the last big unsurfaced pass.

Try it on a racer... Gavia because the south side is so breathtaking. Monte Zoncolan because it is much harder even than the Mortirolo.

If you ride gospel pass along the unmarked road from just outside Hay on Wye there are no downhill bits and you an enjoy 8km of full on climbing!

Clee Hill is a local climb near me which is 4.1 miles with gradients of around 15%max.

Vermoet dat deze 3 even of zelfs nog zwaarder zullen worden. wat een mens toch lijden kan.....

Hardest climb has got to be Mt Washington. 8 miles of back breaking anaerobic oxygen debt.I did it a couple times just after mtn bikes caught on on the eighties.

I wished i had one then.The first couple miles are very steep not as bad but still very hard above treeline then the last 1/4 mile is the steepest for good measure at 22%grade.

Whenever someone says something is hard i think back and say, No Mt Washington is hard.

The hardest single climb i've done was the Bealach Na Ba..2 motnths ago -; I had a chest infection at the time and I swear I near died on the crazy steep section just before the switchbacks..I've never felt like that before on a bike and hope I never feel like that again...; I'd done it before around 2 years ago but my memory had vanquished the trauma..I've been up Alpe De Huez,Galibier-the real north ascent,Croix de Fer/Glandon etc and never felt like this...; .I'll se how the infamous Hardknott/Wrynose/Honister/Newlands passes compare.

These are not very steep and difficult but very attractive and spectacular climbs. That's why it's really perfect passes for long distance tourists with heavy weight baggage.

Strebsko Pleso worths to be reached because of its beautiful mountain lake on the top with no rivers of sweat with permanent views on the highest peaks of High Tatra: Krivan, Lomnicki Stit etc.

Going via Certovice allows you to cross the Low Tatra chain by picturesque serpentine road among fir forests on the slopes. Small restaurant with national Slovak cuisine await you on the top -it's hard to miss it after this ascent!

The Tourmalet (Pyrennes) and Agnello (Italian Alps) were the hardest climbs I've ever done, though for sheer brutality I've never seen a stretch of road as steep as Brasstown Bald in Georgia

(I walked up it to see this year's Tour de Georgia) -- only 3 miles but absolutely brutal.
The adjoining cols Soulour and Aubisque in the Pyrennes are breathtakingly beautiful climbs, and cat 1 in grade (tho collectively I believe they are rated hors category).

In the Dolomites, Passo Rolle is a lovely, gradual climb to above treeline, and Monte Grappa requires a commitment.

Mt Baldy is my local ride and is a real brute if you climb it from Euclid ave off the 10 to the top of the ski lifts. The 168 to schulman grove is very hard but very senic with some very nice rollers.

This is the most crazy descent I have ever done. Pine creek road is fun and not well known. Very safe road.The eastern climbs are all excellent.

Haven't been able to ride much since graduation and a real job but before that bicycle touring sure was fun.

I would recommend the "Silver Thread" Scenic Highway and the "Million Dollar" Highway 550 in Colorado for those interested in great scenery and tough climbs.

I did those in early June and the snow melt made for lots of waterfalls to view.

Evans; Hands down people! start '6500 ft in Idaho Springs climbs for 28 miles ( there are a couple level spots for 100 ft or so.; The last 2 miles are a series of switch backs that average+10 percent and top out at 14,000 ft. I have been in Colorado 5 years now and still am unsuccessfulat the accent.; I am from Santa Cruz, I have been up everything. Mt. Evans is in a category that you sea-level have no idea! If you wish to try it...bring your LUNGS

Listed above are my favorites from those that I have done.
The first three are just absolutely spectacular scenic climbs that have a significant place in racing history that sets them apart from so many other spectacularly beautiful climbs.

I've never ridden the Madeleine; photos tell me that I would probably prefer her to the Galibier, but that was the one I rode on my way to Alp D'Huez. I did the Col D'Izuard the previous day - what a gorgeous cycling area!
The other two are just personal favorites that happen to be pretty tough. The Hurrican Ridge climb starts at sea level in the logging center Port Angeles and climbs straight up to over 5000 feet of elevation.

It is mostly in forest, but breaks out into subalpine meadows at the end, giving a great view across the strait to Vancouver Island in Canada.

The Mt Mitchell climb is almost entirely on park roads which ban commercial trucks and limit autos to 50kmh. This is included in my definition of cycling nirvana...
To me, the toughest I have ever climbed is Brasstown Bald in Georgia (US). It's pretty short, about 6km in the main climb, though the lead up can vary from 15km to about 35km.

The average grade has been variably listed as 16% to 19%. About halfway up there is a 200m stretch around 25% that just hammers you.

It was just before this wall that Cesar Grajalles attacked Lance Armstrong in this year's Tour de Georgia. I think the wall is what prevented a counterattack.

1.Port d Pailhares - 2001 Metres (Lovely little town en route and a beautiful old Monastry/castle half way up). Start from the gorge of st george and cycle to Ax le thermes.

2. Alp d Huez - First 4 kms - wow - scenary was breathtaking. Warm at the bottom and snow covered at the top. Brilliant climb, although a bit cold on the way down.

3.Col d Aubisque - Beautiful view again

I have also climbed the Tourmalet and mont ventoux and thought both were fantastic, if not hard climbs.

The main difference between the two is on the Tourmalet you get breif respites on the legs whereas the Ventoux is non stop 10% climbing for 20kms from Bedoin. Wow

1. Teton Pass from Idaho side into Jackson Hole, WY -- I did this years ago on a loaded touring bike en route cross country. Insane ride over the Grand Tetons -- decends screaming into Jackson Hole.

Would love to do it again without the 50lbs of camping gear.

Vrsic; If anybody would come to Slovenia to do some cycling tours, (s)he should not miss the greatest, the most mythical Slovenian climb, Vrsic.; It has the same value in Slovenia as, for example, the French worship to Alpe d'Huez. The climb is around 10 km long, averages about 7.5%, with some dreadful 14-17% sections in the middle and upper slopes.; Small gears recommended. Take time to view beautiful scenery and nature.

1. Karakoram Pass (between China and Pakistan); This is one of the all time classics! It is better to have a touring bike or preferably a mountain bike, as the road can be rough in places..; You can buy a bike in Kashgar (China), and sell it for the same price in Pakistan, making logistics easy.. High point is around 14,000 feet. It's gorgeous!

.It has a brand new statue of Pantini at the summit.Carved out of stone climbing uphill on his bike.Go there ,pay homage.There are 3 ways up,good quiet roads, fantastic scenery .I went from Val Maira,brilliant.

My number 2 starts from the perfect beach at Porto & winds up through gourges & Hazel Woods to 1400+mtrs.Turn round,head down & be swimming in the warm Mediterranean sea looking back at the mountain.

Number 3 is really overlooked.1604 mtrs from 600 on the Vesubie side in 12 ks.Not huge but quality with a wild descent backto the same valley to the south.Close enough to Nice to have been climbed by Armstrong a 100 times.

1. In July 2004 I rode from Estes Park (elev. 7250') to the alpine visitor center at 11,700' in Rocky Mountain National Park. I did NOT ride up Trail Ridge

Road but rather the unpaved Old Fall River Road. It is uphill for 9 miles. Even in July the summit was 44 degrees with 25 degree wind chill.

The reward near the top was 50 mph wind gusts and oxygen starvation for someone like me who lives near sea level. 2. East Portal Road is only 5 miles long, but 3 of those miles are 16%.

I used my 32x23 and crawled up at just under 4mph. I felt pathetic but I was glad to finish! 3. Rte. 487 is 2 miles at 18%. I did it in 42x26 and couldn't sustain it, had to zig zag.

there are loads of banks in weardale that you can put into loops that will tear your legs out & brake your balls, but i'm a saddist so i'll keep going back,

another one is garrygill near nenthead especially after doing heartside pass going back to sutton bank its not the bank thats the problem its the car drivers trying to be clever and knocking you off

Due to mild weather these climbs can be done throughout the year except for the Hermon climb which is weather dependent from December through March

The Pic du Canigou is a great climb in the French Pyrenees. The last 16kms (of 26) are unpaved, which makes the climb less suitable for a racing bike. Max grade ammounts 21%.

The road is very quiet and the views on the Têt-valley are supurb. From the highest point of the road (2175m) you can walk to the top of the Canigou in about 1,5 hour.

Porlock Hill in Devon is a great climb! Never done it but my grandad who was a keen cyclist in his younger years has told me how nasty it was back then and that was with very few cars on the road!!

I think it is a 1 in 3 at its steepest point and has run offs all the way down the climb. There have been many recorded deaths on the hill due to break failures!
Climb out of Hawes in Dales is also a devil and has three seperate steep sections. A 1 in 6 to start, 1 in 4 near the top and a 1 in 5 at the very top. Saps energy from your legs as it is so long!!

I like all of these climbs because they are really long (between 15-20 miles).They all climb four to five thousand feet in elevation.There are no flat spots or "breaks" to speak of.

When you go to climb them it is either very,very hot or very,very cold.The scenery is very bleak and desolate,like riding your bike on Mars.

It is sometimes difficult to judge the severity of the climb except for the pain in your legs.All average about 6% gradient.I think these are defiitely "HORS" catagory climbs.

Steepest hill UK:Harlech castle in Harlech, Wales; It's not the longest, being only about half a mile, but it is signposted at 45% which is 1 in 2.5 it's the road at the back of Harlech castle in Harlech, Wales. I've ridden up it in order to tick that box.; I was trying out my mountain tamer which turned my triple into a quad and I used 20T X 28T on a mountain bike.

This one is a mighty killer! Small road out of Gayle near Hawes in the Dales. Starts with a 1 in 6 section, not too long.

Climbs for about a mile at a gradient of about 5% but the worst bit is you can see the road way out in front of u getting steeper.

Near the top the road increases to 25% which after the previous climb is a killer! Then the road levels out but about half a mile ahead is a final section at 20% which saps all your energy.

It is worth the climb though as there are great views and a thrilling descent to hammer down

Really interesting site. Unfortunatelly in my country there is no climb longer than 20-22 km :-(. Hapily we have many short climbs with difference in altitude ranging 400-800 m.

The biggest paved climb in Poland is a pass - Przel. Odrodzenie, (from Jelenia Gora - 300 m a.s.l.to Odrodzenie 1248 m a.s.l.) - 950 m of altitude gain. Tarmaced 100% but only once - many years ago.

Last 3.7 km with an average gradient 14%. The road continues to Czech Republic, dropping down deep valley with gradients as low as 5-8%.

You should really bike up Grosse Scheidegg Pass in Berner Oberland if you haven't done so yet!!!

San Pellegrino Pass is a brutal climb across the Italian Appennines with crazy slopes (18%) that you guys should seriously consider tackling.

And don't forget Via Tremola, the cobblestones road with almost no traffic from Airolo, TI to Sankt Gotthard. Beautiful Col du Mont-Cenis is a sentimental choice, I ended up there in the dark...that was thrilling!!!

Albula Pass is a hell of a climb, with plenty of merciless switchblades and very little traffic. But also: Col d'Agnel (I-F), Col de la Bonette (F), Col du Champ (F), Colle S.Carlo (I-Aosta Valley),

Colle Fauniera in North-Western Italy, Col du Galibier & Col de l'Iseran (F), la Croix de Fer from Bourg d'Oisans,...

You may wanna try this: start in Olivone, TI, Switzerland early in the morning, climb up to Lukmanier Pass, down to Disentis (GR), left to Oberalppass,

down to Andermatt (UR) and over to crazy Furkapass, down to Gletch and right over to 5 km of nasty but breathtaking hairpin bends that will get you to Grimselpass, where you should consider stopping for the night!!!

One more tip: there're some amazing climbs in Western Liguria (NW Italy), in the SV and IM provinces.

Check out Teglia pass, Melogno Pass, or Langan Pass just to name a few. And most appenninic roads (S.Pellegrino is one of them) are truly unique:

Lagastrello Pass (MS-PR), Cerreto pass (MS-RE), Pradarena Pass (LU-RE, AMAZING in the winter!), and yes, wild Tomarlo Pass (PR-GE).

I haven't done too many international climbs, well, none really, I just thought it was a bit interesting how Mt. Evans was so completely neglected.

A truly wonderful climb that begins at about 7000 feet in either Idaho Springs or Bergen Park and ascends to over 14,000 feet. Truly spectacular climb, the views are astounding.

The climb isn't that hard, the last 5 miles gets a bit strenuous, but still nothing crazy, max of about 12 to 13 percent I think.
Brasstown Bald is the highest point in Georgia and also probably the hardest climb, a lovely 5 km at an average of about 13 percent I think. A really tough climb, but amazing views, especially in the fall.
Battle Mountain is a pretty short climb over the famous Copper Triangle, but it is blessed with some wonderful scenery.

Shadow Mountain is kind of a shameless plug, as it is my home in Colorado, but still a lovely climb from Evergreen up into the mountains.

Quite steep at the end, but still, a lovely, quiet climb, especially in the evenings.
The Witter Gulch climb is absolutely amazing, it's only partly paved, and the steepest part is on the dirt section. Heavily switchbacked over the last few miles, but beautiful.

Hello all of you! My favourite climb is Vallter 2000, a catalan ski resort near the french border (13 kms at 7,8% with the first three-four kms at 10-12%).

The tarmac ends at 2180 metres above sea level in a magnificient mountain scenario.

Then, there's another not well known climb near Port de la Bonaigua called Llac de Sant Maurici. 1000 metres gain and 20% sections with a superb final view of The Encantats (2750 metres).

Another ski resort in Andorra: Ordino-Arcalís, final climb of the 1997 Tour (Ullrich's Tour) in a hard mountain stage (with the Envalira-Ordino-Arcalís thrilogy).

In Italy there are lots of beautiful and steep climbs like Agnello, Sampeyre, Fauniera, Zoncolan, Marmolada, Giau, Pampeago.... Well, apologies for my poor written English! Adéu.

The Salmo - Creston road gives 1110m climb on perfect pavement. Very little traffic & great high mountain scenery.

Ride west to east for the best continuous climb. On a warm day you can take a swim in the lake at the summit.

The decent into Creston is 40 km of high-speed coasting.

3. Santa Rosa Creek Road - goes from sea level, in Cambria, California, up into the Coast Range mountains, past farms and vineyards and ranches, to reach state highway 41.; This is a wonderful website. Thanks, Luddo, for putting it together.

1.Bielsa; If what you're looking for is tough climbs, try the one from Bielsa (central spanish pyrenees) to the Liena mountain top(1000m to 2600m); and again from Bielsa to the Urdiceto lake (1000m to 2400m in 13 km). you'll need an off-road bike though, but the track is good.

Monte Zoncolan is the most fanstatic one. 10 km at 11.8%, the middle 6km average 15 % with a peak at 21 %, pavement is very bad, road is very narrow.

Mortirolo is nothing but a hill compared to Zoncolan. I've recenty heard about serious roads in hAWAI. Have you ever heard of them ,

From Kottayam (sealevel) to Thekkadi (110 km), Western Ghats, Southern India. Continue from Thekadi to Munnar (110km, both at approx. 1500 m).

Finally from Munnar all the way down to Cochin at sealevel (140 km) * Probolinggo (sealevel) to Mnt. Bromo

Hautacam near Argeles Gazost in the Pyreness. Incl. in the Tour 94, 96, 00.; 13 km long, 8% average. This was the climb Riis won the tour in 96. Probably the biggest moment in cycling due to the way he did it. He did not win according to the cycling book! Ive done it approx. 10 times

I dont have many super steep climbs in my area. The hardest is Anderson Gap which climbs 2000 feet in 3.7 miles but it isnt death and its a one way out and back climb.

The most difficult pass Ive ridden is Sonora Pass. My favorite is McKenzie in Central Oregon.

I must admit that having been involved in many bicycle climbs in Spain and France, the climb to Mount Evans was particularly interesting but for reasons many people may have not experienced.

We, as cyclists, tend to put special emphasis in challenges.

Pikes Peak in Colorado, USA; In 1999 my son Frank ( 15) and myself did Pikes Peak, via Barr Trail, on mountainbikes. Unfortunately we, due to foul weather, only make it till Barr Camp which is 3109 m. high.; The climb is very, very winding and very small and steep. But it is all worth.
